King Bladud's Pigs in Bath
Kate has decorated a pig entirely in mosaic for a public art project in Bath.
100 individually decorated pigs are being displayed in the streets of Bath. Businesses from Bath were invited to sponsor an artist to decorate a pig.
Kate was sponsored by Rotork, world leader in the field of heavy duty actuators, systems and services, for motorisation and manual operation of adaptions, industrial valves and dampers.
The project idea is based on the legend of King Bladud, king of the Britons, who in 863BC, was said to have contracted leprosy after a trip to Athens and couldn't return to his kingdom. He decided to become a swineherd and one day whilst driving his pigs through Bath, the pigs rolled in the hot mud around the springs.
When they got out the King noticed they had been cured of the disease, so he too jumped into the mud and was cured, and was therefore able to return as King.
This is "Prince Ropork" before installation in Bath at The Circus. The mosaic represents the muddy and healing waters running down the pigs back.
It is made with copper ceramic tile, gold ceramic mosaic, mirror, matt ceramic mosaic, round blue ceramic tiles sand glass nuggets.
All the pigs in the project will be sold at auction on Friday 31st October 2008. Much of the profits will be given to the Sustrans charity. All the pigs have been taken in now, but will be on display in Victoria Park on the weekend of 18th and 19th October.
